Kirk Herbstreit Names College Football’s Best Team After Saturday

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit on the set.

The College Football Playoff is officially set. Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Cincinnati will be the four teams competing for a national championship later this month.

The 2021 College Football Playoff field was announced Sunday after a fairly uneventful championship Saturday. Alabama, Michigan and Cincinnati rolled to comfortable victories in their respective title games and Georgia stayed in the Top 4 after its first loss of the season.

The Bulldogs defeat came at the hands of the Crimson Tide, who played their best game of the year on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. Quarterback Bryce Young lit up a talented Georgia defense and Alabama won comfortably, 41-24.

After witness the Crimson Tide’s performance in the SEC Championship game, Kirk Herbstreit had no hesitations in calling Alabama the top team in the country.

“I think Alabama made a really loud statement with their performance,” Herbstreit said while appearing on NFL Countdown on Sunday morning, per Saturday Down South. “Alabama has not been the team that they were yesterday, and Georgia has been. And that’s why we play college football. You kind of expect the unexpected, and it was a dominating performance.

“You gotta give Bryce Young credit. He probably secured the Heisman Trophy and also knocked of Georgia. Also, I think it will put Alabama back to where they’re used to being — the top team in the country as we get ready for the announcement later today. I don’t know that, but that’s my feeling.”

The College Football Playoff committee obviously agreed with Herbstreit. Alabama claimed the top spot in the final rankings and will now square off with Cincinnati in one of this year’s semifinals.

After Saturday’s loss, Georgia fell to No. 3 in the eyes of the committee. The Bulldogs will now play Michigan in the second 2021 semifinal and do their best to set up an SEC Championship rematch.
