Freedom of South Lanarkshire granted to the Royal Regiment of Scotland

The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) has been honoured by South Lanarkshire Council.

On the full council assembly, a movement was proposed by Provost Margaret Cooper and seconded by the Veterans’ Champion, councillor Mark Horsham, to grant the Freedom of South Lanarkshire to the regiment.

Provost Cooper mentioned: “I'm delighted that we've been in a position to honour the Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) on this means.

“It means they are going to be capable of parade by the streets of South Lanarkshire with their bayonets fastened, drums beating and pipes taking part in.

“It's an incredible sight to see, and I'm positive communities throughout South Lanarkshire can be enthralled once we agree a date for this to happen, someday within the New 12 months.”

Councillor Horsham ( Clydesdale South) added: “Most of us will know of household, mates or neighbours which have served and are serving throughout the regiment not solely finishing up duties throughout occasions of battle however in peace time as properly.

“The SCOTS are an essential a part of our communities, and this settlement will go in the direction of the continued engagement between the regiment and the folks of South Lanarkshire.”

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Jonathan Tink, Regimental Secretary RHQ SCOTS, mentioned: “The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) is the senior line infantry of the British Military. It was fashioned on 28 March 2006 and based on the combating heritage of historic Scottish infantry regiments.

“The Royal Regiment of Scotland consists of three common battalions, an incremental firm and two reserve battalions.

“The SCOTS recruit nationally and have hyperlinks relationship again to the Cameronians, initially from South Lanarkshire.

“It's a nice honour to be granted the Freedom of any native authority – the place the regiment can honour their fore bearers with pleasure.”

The historic regiments of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) had been Royal Scots, Royal Highland Fusiliers, King’s Personal Scottish Borderers, Black Watch, The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons), The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 2/51 Lowland Volunteers and a pair of/51 Highland Volunteers.
