A metropolis councillor fears aged residents might face a “excessive threat of damage” after avenue lighting was eliminated in a Co Down housing property.
According to the Downshire East consultant, the considerations have been heightened locally attributable to a scarcity of communication from the Division for Infrastructure (DfI).
The general public security matter has now made the world in Titterington Gardens a no-go zone for residents throughout the nighttimes, it's claimed.
Lisburn and Castlereagh Metropolis councillor Alex Swan of the UUP mentioned: “Whereas I settle for that in some situations the elimination of lighting according to DfI coverage is appropriate, to take away the road lighting on a pathway with two flights of steps is ridiculous.
“I used to be approached by an aged resident of Titterington Gardens, Drumbo regarding the elimination of two avenue lights at a pedestrian pathway on the rear of her residence.
“Apparently whereas the opposite avenue lights have been upgraded it was felt by DfI Roads’ engineers that these two lights didn’t meet the division’s coverage.
“At evening these steps are in complete darkness, if a pedestrian tripped and fell there can be a excessive threat of damage and probably authorized motion. I forwarded an e mail by way of the MLA Robbie Butler’s workplace months in the past (to DfI), I’ve but to obtain a response.”
Nevertheless, the long run for the Drumbo residents shouldn't be a vivid one following affirmation from DfI that the lights wouldn't get replaced.
A spokesperson mentioned: “The division put in a brand new LED lighting scheme at Titterington Gardens, Drumbo in 2021, as a part of its ongoing avenue lighting upgrading programme.
“Consistent with present coverage, two avenue lights have been eliminated on the facet and on the rear of Titterington Gardens.
“The division’s coverage on avenue lighting for entry pathways, together with rear entry pathways states that these roads, footways and footpaths which solely give rear entry to properties, or are various routes to already lighted roads or footpaths, will typically not be lit.
“Consequently, there are not any plans to hold out any additional works at this location.”
