Armed cops descended on train station to find suspected gun was garden hose

Armed police swooped on a practice station – solely to discover a man who claimed to be carrying a gun had a backyard hose nozzle in his hand.

Officers rushed to the scene in Carfin, Lanarkshire, after James Stevenson advised Scotrail employees he had a 9mm pistol.

A court docket heard on Friday Stevenson had threatened to shoot himself within the incident final December.

Officers then found the “weapon” he’d been holding was a backyard system.

The 32-year-old admitted at Hamilton Sheriff Court docket to committing a breach of the peace.

Prosecutor Chloe O’Hara stated upkeep employees noticed Stevenson on the platform at about midnight. He stated he’d discovered a gun and so they contacted British Transport Police.

She added: “Shortly after this, he walked out of the station and shouted, ‘I wish to give up’.

“Then officers from the firearms unit arrived. They instructed Stevenson to lie on the bottom. He did so and was handcuffed.

“A backyard hose nozzle was situated subsequent to him.”

Sheriff John Speir remanded Stevenson in custody for experiences.
