Man in 20s dies after falling into Thames while being arrested by police

A person in his 20s has died after falling into the River Thames whereas being arrested by police.

Officers on patrol had been alerted to a verbal altercation between a person and lady, who had been identified to one another, on Kingston Bridge in Kingston upon Thames, south west London, at about 10.30pm on Friday.

Scotland Yard mentioned an allegation of theft was made and police had been within the strategy of arresting the person when he entered the water.

He had not been positioned in handcuffs, the drive added.

The Met’s Marine Policing Unit, Nationwide Police Air Service, London Fireplace Brigade and the RNLI had been concerned in a search to seek out the person.

He was recovered from the water at about 12.30am on Saturday and handled by paramedics however later pronounced useless.

The person’s household has been knowledgeable and enquiries are ongoing.

The Met mentioned its Directorate of Skilled Requirements has made a referral to the Unbiased Workplace for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is conducting an impartial investigation.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor mentioned: “My ideas, and people of the Metropolitan Police Service, are with the family and friends of the person who has sadly misplaced his life following this incident.

“I absolutely recognize the general public shall be very involved. We, in fact, share that concern.

“The Met’s Directorate of Skilled Requirements made an instantaneous referral to the Unbiased Workplace for Police Conduct as is protocol in any incident during which an individual involves hurt following police contact.

“We are going to absolutely help the IOPC’s investigation.”

IOPC investigators have taken preliminary accounts from the officers concerned.

In a press release on its web site, the IOPC mentioned: “Now we have now begun the method of gathering and reviewing proof, together with footage of the interplay between officers and the person.

“Our ideas are with the person’s family members and all these affected by his demise.”
