Man arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences over 1996 IRA Manchester bomb

A person has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences in reference to the 1996 bombing carried out by the IRA in Manchester metropolis centre, Better Manchester Police stated.

In a press release they added: “A person has been arrested final evening at Birmingham Airport on suspicion of terrorism offences and stays in custody the place he might be interviewed by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing for the North West.

"This arrest is in reference to enquiries into the IRA bomb detonation that shook Manchester Metropolis Centre in 1996.”

A 3,000lb truck bomb was detonated close to the town's Arndale Centre on June 15, 1996, inflicting widespread devastation and leaving greater than 200 individuals injured.

Miraculously, nobody was killed.

It had been the second time the town had been focused by the republican terrorist group through the Nineteen Nineties.

The IRA detonated two explosions within the metropolis in December 1992, injuring 64 individuals.
