Irish president pays tribute to ‘generosity and kindness’ of Thomas O’Halloran

The Irish president has paid tribute to the “generosity and kindness” of Thomas O’Halloran, an 87-year-old Irishman who died after being stabbed in London.

President Michael D Higgins expressed his sympathy for Mr O’Halloran’s household and mates and to the Irish group in London the place he lived.

A person charged with homicide has been remanded in custody.

Lee Byer, 44, appeared at Willesden Magistrates’ Courtroom on Friday over the alleged killing of Mr O’Halloran, in Greenford, west London, on Tuesday.

Mr O’Halloran, who was initially from Ennistymon in Co Clare, died after he was stabbed within the chest whereas on his mobility scooter.

In a press release, Mr Higgins mentioned: “On behalf of the individuals of Eire, could I categorical my profound sympathy to all of the family members of Thomas O’Halloran who died beneath such tragic circumstances this week, to the Irish group in London of whom he was an element, and to all in London and Eire who knew him.

“I can solely think about the deep shock that his household and his mates are experiencing and will I convey my heartfelt condolences to all of them.

“The grief that they are going to be feeling, I can share.”

He mentioned Mr O’Halloran was “so altruistically minded and certainly cherished in his local people in Greenford”.
