Holidaymakers face disruption as Prestwick Airport workers insist they are not out to cripple sunseekers ahead of strike action

Prestwick Airport staff insist they're NOT out to cripple holidaymakers forward of strike motion this week.

Workers will down instruments from 6am on Friday with a raft of important staff strolling off the job.

Safety, firefighters, airfield operators, floor crew, floor dealing with, cargo, buyer companies and cleaners will all be affected.

The dispute centres on the airport's refusal to pay shift allowances and meet the Actual Residing Wage (£9.90) charge for brand spanking new starters.

Strike motion will proceed over 4 weeks on each Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Union bosses insist they may proceed to hit the airport arduous till significant talks over pay happen.

Baggage handler David McRonald, Unite convenor on the airport, mentioned: "You're employed to get higher off — you're employed to offer for your loved ones.

"You do not work to tackle a second job, to tackle additional time — or to go to foodbanks simply to get your meals.

"We will not have this as a society and we won't have this on the airport.

"The true residing wage was promised to us in 2020 and in 2021 they refused to pay it — that is the minimal the workforce needs to be getting."

Airport employees are searching for a shift allowance cost to accompany their wage rise, however talks have to date hit a brick wall.

David added: "The corporate got here again and mentioned they wish to pay zero. Zero for our contribution by these instances.

"So the members have determined they've had sufficient.

"We're not right here to cripple the airport — we're solely right here to attempt to get a good pay for our members.

"We're beginning at 6am within the morning — the rationale we selected that point is as a result of we did not wish to have an effect on the primary wave [of holidaymakers] going out within the morning.

Prestwick councillor, Cameron Ramsay, added: "It is a final resort and it is unbelievable that the employees have needed to stand there while the hierarchy of Prestwick Airport have slapped them within the face by providing them a 'pay rise'."

Airport chiefs have to date slammed the "confrontational method" of the strike motion which they are saying "jeopardises the delicate restoration of the airport".

A spokesperson mentioned: “Following in depth negotiations with unions the airport made an enhanced pay supply which is able to see 70 per cent of our 300-plus staff receiving a pay improve of 6.5 per cent or above, enhancements to allowances, elevated annual depart entitlement, enhanced sick pay provisions, and as much as two per cent extra employer pension contributions.

"All certified everlasting employees will earn above the true residing wage.

“This deal was accepted by nearly all of our employees, together with Prospect union members, however disappointingly was rejected by Unite.”
