Sheku Bayoh is 'Scotland's George Floyd' say family as inquiry into death set to begin

The household of a Scots man who died in police custody have mentioned he's "Scotland's George Floyd " because the inquiry into his loss of life begins this week.

Sheku Bayoh died in Could 2015 after he was restrained by officers responding to a name from a member of the general public in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

Now his household say that race performed a component in his loss of life and criticised the next investigation into the Police Scotland officers' conduct on the evening of Mr Bayoh's loss of life.

A public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Mr Bayoh's loss of life, chaired by Lord Bracadale, commences on Tuesday in Edinburgh.

In an announcement launched on behalf of Mr Bayoh, lawyer Aamer Anwar mentioned that his family members have waited a "very very long time" to listen to the reality.

Mr Anwar mentioned: "The general public inquiry will lastly begin seven years and 7 days after Sheku Bayoh died in police custody, and two years for the reason that former Lord Advocate suggested the Bayoh household that not one police officer would face fees for the loss of life of Sheku Bayoh.

"Sheku's household consider they had been failed by those that have an obligation to guard the general public and uphold the regulation."

Mr Anwar claimed that there have been "repeated makes an attempt to criminalise, stereotype and smear" Mr Bayoh. It has been maintained that Mr Bayoh was empty-handed on the time of his arrest.

Mr Anwar added: "The primary officers on the scene subjected Sheku to CS spray, Pava spray and using batons.

"He was face down on the bottom in lower than 50 seconds, he was restrained by as much as seven officers.

"He was handcuffed and had ankle and legs restraints utilized to him. Inside minutes he had stopped respiration after which died. His physique was lined with over 24 separate lacerations, cuts, bruises, and a damaged rib.

"The Bayoh household have described Sheku as Scotland's George Floyd, the one distinction they consider is that regardless of seven years of wrestle, the Bayohs have by no means seen justice and are but to listen to the entire reality.

Deborah Coles, director of the justice charity Inquest, who has been working with the household, mentioned that the inquiry was a "watershed second" in Scotland for analyzing points round institutional racism.

A vigil exterior of Capital Home on Lothian Highway, Edinburgh may even start on Tuesday.
