Couple give up stressful commute for new crofting life on Shetland island

A headteacher has given up her demanding two-hour commute to highschool – to develop into a crofter on a tiny island off Shetland.

Helen Hart, 55, and companion Jason Tilbury, 57, are the house owners of South Brough Croft on Yell, one in all Shetland’s North Isles, the place they have a tendency to 26 acres of land, taking care of 40 sheep and 15 chickens, and working a enterprise promoting rugs.

It marks an enormous change from their life in Maidstone, Kent, the place Helen ran a college and Jason was an ambulance driver.

Helen mentioned: “The second I got here right here, I simply felt this overwhelming peace and sense of belonging.”

Alongside their duties on the croft, Helen works as an English instructor on each Yell and Unst, whereas Jason is a coastguard.

● The couple’s story is on Ben Fogle’s New Lives In The Wild on Channel 5 at 9pm on Tuesday.
