SIU clears Durham officer in death of man who crashed on Hwy. 115 and was tasered

The SIU says there are "no reasonable grounds" to believe a Durham police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the death of a 48-year-old man last October.

The province’s police watchdog has cleared a Durham police officer of prison wrongdoing in reference to the loss of life of a 48-year-old man in Clarington this previous October.

In response to the Particular Investigations Unit (SIU), on the morning of Oct. 2, 2021 police have been on the lookout for a person who had dedicated an armed theft at a jewellery retailer in Belleville.

The SIU says the person fled the scene and ultimately crashed his car right into a ditch on Hwy. 115 between Concession Street 8 and Skelding Street in Clarington.

The person received out of the car and began preventing with the motive force of one other car that was stopped on the shoulder of the freeway.

When police approached, the person fled throughout the freeway and threatened to shoot the officers, the SIU says.

A Durham police officer used a carried out vitality weapon and the person fell on the street and was handcuffed by police.

“The person grew to become unresponsive throughout a search, so officers administered two doses of naloxone and assisted with resuscitative efforts.  The person was taken to hospital through ambulance and died the next day,” the SIU says.

The SIU says the reason for the person’s loss of life stays unknown, however “there have been no cheap grounds to imagine that it was attributable to illegal conduct by the concerned officers."

The SIU is a provincial company that investigates incidents of loss of life, severe damage and allegations of sexual assault involving cops.
