Second-degree murder charge laid after ‘unprovoked’ attack at southern Alberta prison

DRUMHELLER, Alta. - RCMP say a person at a medium-security federal jail in southern Alberta has been charged within the loss of life of a fellow inmate.

Mounties say officers responded to a name Wednesday of a critical assault at Drumheller Establishment.

They allege an assault on 34-year-old Jeffrey Ryan of Parkland County, Alta., was unprovoked.

RCMP say Ryan sustained critical accidents and later died in hospital.

Ashley Baird of Nanaimo, B.C., who's 38, has been charged with second-degree homicide and is to seem in Drumheller provincial court docket on Feb. 11.

Police say an post-mortem has been ordered by the Workplace of the Chief Medical Examiner and will likely be carried out within the coming days.
