In an effort to right their ship, the Miami Hurricanes are sparing no expense to bring Oregon’s Mario Cristobal – a Miami legend – on as their next head coach.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Cristobal and the ‘Canes are in the late stages of negotiating a deal. Per the report, Cristobal is set to make upwards of $8 million year on a deal lasting five-plus years.
That deal is only a slight bump from what he was making at Oregon. As of last year he was on a six-year, $27.3 million contract with the Ducks, but with incentives his salary for this year reached around $7 million.
But it may have been more than the money prying Cristobal from the comfort of Eugene, Oregon. Cristobal is a Miami native who won two national titles for them as an offensive tackle.
The Hurricanes gave Cristobal his first coaching job as a graduate assistant in 1998, and brought him back for a second stint as a positional assistant in 2004.
Mario and UM have been in late stages of negotiations for a deal in $8 M a year range for deal longer than 5 years. Radakovich also expected to join Mario here. UM official expect both to come unless somebody "gets cold feet." https://t.co/Egbf2KodD7

Mario Cristobal got his first head coaching job at FIU in 2007. Despite going just 27-47 with the program, he led the Panthers to their first ever bowl games. Cristobal also led FIU to their only conference championship in program history.
After several years as Alabama and one at Oregon as co-offensive coordinator, Cristobal was hired as Oregon’s head coach 2017. He led them to a 9-4 record in 2018, followed by a Pac-12 title and Rose Bowl win in 2019.
Last year the Ducks won the Pac-12 title thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing other teams out of contention. And this year he once again had Oregon in the title game, but lost to Utah.
Miami have one of the best coaches in the game on their hands now. And maybe someone who can correct course for the entire program.
