The college football coaching carousel has been spinning out of control as of late. But Panthers head coach Matt Rhule isn’t interested joining it. For now, at least.
Rhule was reportedly LSU’s top target before hiring Notre Dame‘s Brian Kelly. He also found himself being targeted by USC and Oklahoma.
Rhule, who revived Temple and Baylor before moving to the professional ranks, is in his second year as Carolina’s head coach. However, it’s been a bit rocky for to start. The offense has yet to really find much of an identity, and not having a franchise quarterback behind center hasn’t helped that.
The Panthers' brass attended the ACC championship to see Kenny Pickett's big game. Wrote last week on why – and why not – the Pitt QB could make sense for Matt Rhule, who had a commitment from Pickett at Temple five years ago.https://t.co/a3x7ABuKUO

Not to mention, coaching most of his games without All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey.
The team took a flyer on former first-round pick Sam Darnold when he hit free agency. And while it initially looked like the move could work, Darnold was quickly bit by the turnover bug.
Since then, the Panthers brought back former MVP Cam Newton. And while he remains a fan favorite in Charlotte, he’s not quite as dynamic as he once was and definitely is not the long-term answer.
.@stephenasmith did NOT go easy on Cam Newton 😳

Although the offensive side of the ball has had its struggles, Rhule’s been able to build a strong defensive unit. Especially in the secondary.
According to reports, Penn State would be the hardest job for Rhule to turn down, but James Franklin recently signed a long-term contract to stay the coach of the Nittany Lions.
